Durham University

Orientation 

Durham is a collegiate university with 16 different colleges and is England’s third oldest university founded in 1832. Durham is a picturesque, historic city that is home to the world-famous castle and cathedral, a UNESCO world heritage site, and the location of many blockbuster movies, including Harry Potter. You will be joining a university community of more than 17,000 students where international students represent 156 countries. Study abroad students benefit from additional international support services such as airport meet and greets, accommodation check in support, specialized international welcome orientation and activities to help you settle into your study abroad experience.  

Campus Life 

Each college is responsible for running activities such as sports and society clubs for students, including study abroad, to get involved with. This is a perfect opportunity to meet students outside of your classes and residence halls. In October 2012 a new student center opened as part of a wider investment in facilities including expansions of the Library and Sports Centre, which boasts one of only three indoor powered rowing tanks in the UK. Rowing is big at Durham, including the annual boat race against Newcastle University on the River Tyne and the age-old Durham Regatta. 

Academics  

Study abroad students are taught alongside British students enrolled on full degree courses. Durham is one of 24 Russell Group universities, dedicated to the highest levels of academic excellence, and maintains very competitive admission standards. A leading center of scholarship and learning, Durham is consistently ranked in the top ten of most comprehensive league tables in the UK, giving you the opportunity to study under prestigious faculty and researchers. UK universities expect students to self-manage their time between lectures, tutorials and independent study hours. Additional support services are available for study abroad students to help you adjust to the UK higher education system and be successful in your study abroad. 

Accommodation 

Study abroad students are offered housing with all our UK university partners, provided you apply by the deadline. Accommodation at Durham is managed directly by each of the 16 colleges and varies in price depending on location, style and length of stay. Once you are admitted into Durham you will receive information from your college regarding accommodation. Living in University housing is a great way to meet new people from around the world and develop life-long relationships and fantastic travel partners!

The requirements to study abroad in the UK and apply to the program of your choice are straight forward. In order to proceed with an application you need to make sure you have the following information:

  • Official Transcript
  • You will need to have at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA​

Durham University is located in the North of England, about two and half hours South of Edinburgh, Scotland and three and half hours North of London, England. The city of Durham is an old, historic Cathedral town so definitely that picturesque English town you see in movies, parts of Harry Potter was shot here after all! The university is made of up 16 different smaller colleges, so while the university population is large, you will have small, friendly, close-knit groups of friends within your college. It is the perfect balance of strong academics and great authentic English living.

Durham’s summer session is from the 4th of July to the 29th of July and is inclusive of a weekend trip to London and a full social programming to ensure you have an amazing summer of academics, fun and cultural exploration.
